These Pom Poms are easy to make and look really effective on cakes. There are several different ways to make them but I find this way makes a much neater domed shaped Pom Pom.. But they are a bit more time consuming.
You will need
Modelling paste ( your choice of colour )
Frilling tool
Round cookie cutters
Rolling pin ( pasta rolling machine )
Corn flour
Edible glue
1: Colour some modelling paste to your chosen colour and roll out do not roll out too thinly as you want to be able to get a nice frill around the edge. Try to roll out the fondant evenly too as different thicknesses will cause the circles to be different sizes once frilled. ( I prefer to use a pasta rolling machine for this set to the thickest setting. )
2: Using any size cookie cutter ( depending on the size you want ) cut out 17 circles. Keep them in a zip lock bag until your ready to frill them.
3: Frill around the edge of 6 of the circles By rolling the frilling tool back and forth along the edge of the circle. Had a light dusting of corn flour if the modelling paste is sticking.
4: Once you have frilled 6 take one and fold in half ensuring the edges line up.
5: Now fold about 1/3 over again making sure the edges are lined up.
6: Fold the other side underneath so you have a folded cone.
7: Once all size have been folded apply a light brushing of edible glue over one of the circles and arrange the 6 pieces around the circle. You can use the tip of the frilling took to arrange the frills so there are no obvious seams.
8: Next frill and fold 5 circles and applying a little edible glue arrange on top of the first layer. Press down in the centre with your finger this will naturally bring the second layer up a touch creating the beginning of a seamless dome.
9: Repeat again with 4 circles. You may have to pinch the bottom tip off if the frill is over hanging the second layer. Use your finger to gently push down in the middle and arrange the frills with the frilling tool.
10: For the last piece frill one circle and fold. Pinch in at the bottom and cut off to just below the frill and place on the top with s little edible glue.
Leave to dry completely before attaching them to your cake. I use sugar cemen to stick them directly to the cake as they need a firm hold..
